L3S Is Part of the New AI Synergy Alliance of Leading AI Research Centres

Three universities, one goal: L3S, representing Leibniz University Hannover, has joined forces with RWTH Aachen University and Darmstadt University of Technology to establish an AI Synergy Alliance aimed at intensifying collaboration in research, teaching and knowledge transfer in the field of artificial intelligence.

L3S, the AI Centre at RWTH Aachen, and hessian.ai at Darmstadt University of Technology aim to jointly identify synergies, advance the development and responsible application of artificial intelligence, and actively help shape the German and European AI landscape.

The new alliance seeks to connect researchers, lecturers and students across the three locations. It will initiate joint projects, strengthen academic excellence and develop innovative approaches in key future fields of AI. The focus is on human‑centred AI that combines technological performance with security, transparency and societal benefit.

Planned measures of the AI Synergy Alliance:

Shared teaching and learning resources: Exchange of materials, joint courses, hybrid lecture series and guest lectures – including on topics such as AI safety that go beyond purely technical questions.
Research visits and exchange: Mobility between locations, access to new networks and infrastructures, and close cooperation, particularly for early‑career researchers.
Support for emerging researchers: Calls for AI awards and fellowships to enhance the visibility and profile development of outstanding talent. The aim is to support early‑career researchers and thereby strengthen Germany’s long‑term position in AI.
Networking and in‑person events: Regular meetings, workshops and community events for direct knowledge exchange.
Joint press and public relations activities: Coordinated communication to highlight achievements.
Networking with relevant partners: Integration with the European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIH) in Aachen, Darmstadt and Hannover, as well as collaboration with regional AI service centres such as  KISSKI, hessian.AISC and West.AI – supporting strong knowledge transfer into industry and society.
