University Professorship (m/f/d) in Multi-Modal Signal Processing

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science invites applications for the following position within salary scale W2 of the Lower Saxony salary system (NBesO) with tenure track leading to salary scale W3 NBesO to be appointed at the earliest possible date: University Professorship (m/f/d) in Multi-Modal Signal Processing

The position is limited to 5 years. Following a positive evaluation, the candidate will receive a tenured professorship (salary scale W3 NBesO).

The Position:

The professorship is intended to cover multimodal digital signal processing in research and teaching. The future professor must have an excellent scientific background in signal processing and coding and several of the following application areas:

  • Digital signal processing, especially on time series data
  • Information theory
  • Bioinformatics
  • Computational Biology
  • Encoding and transmission of high-dimensional data.

Leibniz University Hannover is one of the locations of the newly established Lower Saxony research center for artificial intelligence and causal methods in medicine – CAIMed. At CAIMed, international teams research and develop innovative methods at the interface between AI and personalized medicine and contribute to tackling common diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases and infections.

Your profile:

An excellent research profile, active participation in teaching in computer science/information technology, e.g. in the form of lectures on “information theory” or “video coding”, commitment to academic self-administration and successful acquisition of third-party funding are expected.

As part of CAIMed, your active participation in projects with a medical focus (e.g. time series, omics data, digital imaging) is sought. Sound knowledge of German and English is also required.

The Position:

The future position holder should represent the field of Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence and Causality in research and teaching. The professorship is intended to advance the relevant state of the art in the areas of trustworthy artificial intelligence, causal representation learning and causal models, and to further develop and apply these in the field of medicine.

Leibniz University Hannover is one of the locations of the newly established Lower Saxony research center for artificial intelligence and causal methods in medicine – CAIMed. At CAIMed, international teams research and develop innovative methods at the interface between AI and personalized medicine and contribute to tackling common diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases and infections.

The junior professorship complements the faculty’s “Artificial Intelligence” research focus as well as research in this area at the L3S Research Center and is part of CAIMed. Active participation in teaching in the field of Trustworthy AI and Causal Representation Learning and the acquisition of third-party funded projects is expected, joint work in the context of L3S is possible and desired.

Your profile:

An excellent PhD on current topics in the context of artificial intelligence as well as relevant publications in trustworthy artificial intelligence and causal methods are prerequisites for the appointment. International collaborations and project experience are an advantage. The successful candidate will be expected to hold selected courses in English.

Research Associate (PhD Student, m/f/d) in Robot Learning (Salary Scale 13 TV-L, 100 %)

To be filled as soon as possible, ideally starting on October 1st, 2024. The position is initially limited to two years and offers the possibility to do a PhD. The scope of the position corresponds to 100% of the jointly agreed working hours.

The L3S is an internationally renowned research center for basic and applied research in the field of artificial intelligence for digital transformation, founded in 2001. The L3S research center develops forward-looking research methods and technologies for the digital transformation and researches the effects of digitalization in the areas of production, mobility, medicine and education.

Project:

We aim to improve multimodal (kinesthetic and tactile) information integration for robot-mediated remote manipulation. We aim to advance the following three objectives: 1) To characterize the contact interaction of a robotic manipulator with manipulated objects; 2) To develop and validate a human model for the integration of kinesthetic and tactile information in perception, grip force control, and manipulation, and; 3) To investigate the performance of haptic stimulation devices for conveying haptic information, to increase remote manipulation performance while reducing the user’s cognitive load.

Your tasks:

At L3S, new AI and machine learning methods are developed with a broad spectrum of applications, ranging from production and mobility to the development of digital twins. Your task will be to work independently on corresponding interdisciplinary research questions and development tasks in the context of projects in the field of AI, machine learning, or robot learning, to contribute to knowledge transfer and training, to work with regional businesses on applications of AI, and to publish research results at international conferences and in scientific journals.

Your profile:
  • The prerequisite for employment is a completed scientific university degree (Master or Diploma) in Computer Science, Robotics, Automation, Artificial Intelligence, Control Engineering, or from a similar field.
  • Ideally, you will also bring in-depth knowledge in the focus areas of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotics.
  • You should have the ability and willingness to collaborate with experts from different scientific and technical disciplines as well as from industry.
  • In addition, very good English skills both oral and written, are expected.
  • We also expect proficiency in the use of Linux, Python, Git, experience with deep learning libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch).
