AI for the Medicine of Tomorrow: Minister Mohrs and Dr. Schütte Visit CAIMed

Falko Mohrs, Lower Saxony’s Minister of Science, and Dr Georg Schütte, Director of the Volkswagen Foundation, visited the Lower Saxony Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Causal Methods in Medicine (CAIMed) at Hannover Medical School. The focus was on current projects that demonstrate how AI can make healthcare more precise, faster and more individualised.

Research with direct benefits

As spokesperson for CAIMed, L3S Director Prof. Wolfgang Nejdl emphasised how basic research and powerful foundation models are being used to develop AI methods that are technically advanced and at the same time transparent to doctors and nursing staff. In this way, L3S is playing a key role in ensuring that new AI approaches are adopted in everyday clinical practice.

Live demonstrations showcased current applications:

  • Cancer diagnostics: AI-supported image analysis improves precision in cytology.
  • Oncology: New methods for identifying extrachromosomal DNA open up avenues for personalised therapies.
  • Long-term effects of the virus: Models support prediction and prevention.
  • Radiology: AI analyses accelerate the detection of pulmonary nodules.
  • Paediatric intensive care: A prediction model for sepsis provides early information about risks and reduces the workload for hospital staff.

Lower Saxony is a pioneer

Minister Mohrs highlighted the “outstanding quality of AI research in Lower Saxony and its direct clinical benefits,” while Dr. Schütte praised CAIMed as a “unique innovation ecosystem for the healthcare of tomorrow.”
