TRAVELOGUES

Travelogues are a highly important historical resource. They give deep insights into the historic dimension of the perception of the Other. By identifying, analyzing, and deconstructing and hence critically engaging with the historic dimension of otherness within travelogues, it is possible to raise more awareness for perceptions of the Other, and generate historic contextual knowledge and orientation for the present and the future. Our aim is to determine lexical cues with which Others are marked in such historical corpora. To determine the lexical cues, we need to understand the context in which lexical cues refer to the Others, and furthermore, take into account the aspect of language evolution to determine how such cues change in meaning and context.
