In the case of large research projects the participating scientists can apply for the formal establishment of an interdisciplinary research centre. The precondition, however, is that it is a clearly described, extensive and interdisciplinary research topic. The cooperation extends beyond the borders of faculties and subjects.
The Presidential Executive Committee decides on its establishment after external assessment of the research project. The international and scientific visibility of the project and of the participants is necessary. For this reason the current research activities in the research centres are evaluated periodically (every five years). The evaluations are arranged in such a way that the work involved for all the participating subject representatives and assessors remains reasonable.
