Annual Report 2013

The World Wide Web, in its 25 years of existence, has had a huge impact on all areas of society. For that reason, interdisciplinary research has been important at L3S since its foundation in 2001, and is becoming even more important now, in this age of Web and Data Science, both for the applications as well as for the infrastructures we build. The following examples, taken from the many new projects starting this year at L3S, give a nice insight into the disciplines we are working with.

Annual Report 2012

"Did you know, that Myspace, the most visited social networking site in the world from 2005 until early 2008, had only 2.6 million active users last month? Did you know that Facebook, launched 10 years ago, boasts more than 160 million users per month, and YouTube, in the last 8 years, has gone up to more than 1.6 billion users per month1? The world of the Web is highly dynamic, and much of what you see on the Web today will have vanished in ten years from now.
In the same vain, the diagram from Mark Schueler at Southampton University I have included on the opposite page, illustrates well the usage phases of the Web, demonstrating both its explosive growth as well as its unprecedented dynamics."
