On April 13th 2012, the L3S hosted the first and official ITIS-Welcome Day in Hannover. Among new and advanced students from the four cooperating universities Göttingen, Clausthal, Braunschweig and Hannover, also professors, research assistants as well as L3S employees followed the invitation. A mix of competent contributions, poster presentations and discussions completed the program. It was the shared aim to answer open questions and to offer a first get to know each other.

Last week the LUH-Student Helge Holzmann and his fellows of the FH Hannover & Uni Bielefeld won the German Imagine Cup 2012 finals with a climate smart navigation system in the category “Software design”.

Welcome to Prof. Panagiotis Papadimitriou at L3S. In March 2012, Prof. Papadimitrious is appointed as a member of L3S in the research group “Next Generation Internet (NGI)” . Now, the board of L3S counts nine excellent scientifics of different faculties.

With the amount of 900.000 Euro in total for the period 2011- 2013, the MWK supports the successful research work of the L3S in regard to the suggestions of the Wissenschaftsrat in 2010.

At the 2011 IEEE / WIC / ACM International Conference on Web Intelligence (WI 2011) in Lyon, France end of August Ralf Krestel from L3S Research Center in Hannover and Nima Dokoohki from Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm received the award for the best paper of the year.

Social Web stands for the culture of participation and collaboration on the Web. Structures emerge from social interactions: social tagging enables a community of users to assign freely chosen keywords to Web resources. The structure that evolves from social tagging is called folksonomy and recent research has shown that the exploitation of folksonomy structures is beneficial to information systems.

Abstract:

In service-oriented systems with real business settings, the non-functional properties play an important role in the service life cycle, including discovery, selection and operation of services. This PhD thesis focuses on two research challenges related to the non-functional aspects of web service composition.

Dr. rer. nat. Christoph Lofi: PhD successfully concluded

In March, Dr. Christoph Lofi successfully concluded his PhD at the Carolo-Wilhelmina University Braunschweig. Most of his research was performed within the context of the APIS project (http://www.l3s.de/apis/).

The IEEE International Conference on Data Engineering (ICDE) is a premier forum for presentation of research results and advanced data-intensive applications and discussion of issues on data and knowledge engineering. The mission of the conference is to share research solutions to problems of today's information society and to identify new issues and directions for future research and development work. The 27. ICDE 2011 is organized by the L3S Research Center.

Minister Prof. Wanka attends the L3s Parliamentary Evening: "From Swine Flu to Wikileaks: The World Wide Web Changed the World"

On Tuesday, March 15, the L3S Research Center held its first parliamentary evening at the Leibniz House, Hanover.

Learining more about M-Eco - Politicians and other interested parties informed themselves at the Cebit 2011. From March 1-5, L3S presented the M-Eco project at CeBIT in Hannover.

Er ist acht Jahre alt. Er kann lesen, er erkennt die Wörter, aber das, was er liest, versteht er nicht oder nur teilweise. Überall in Europa gibt es Mädchen und Jungen, die  Lernschwächen haben. Obwohl sie über ausreichende kognitive Fähigkeiten sowie über einen genügend großen Wortschatz verfügen, bereitet es vielen Kindern Schwierigkeiten, Schlussfolgerungen aus Texten zuziehen. Das soll sich nun ändern.

Internet pages are like stars in the sky: They are uncountable many, and every day new appear. They bring new texts, information, and pictures into existence, some of which only exist in the Internet. But who is to decide which pages are worth to preserve? Libraries and archives are currently rather helpless to deal with such gigantic amounts of data. With the current state of technology, it is not feasible to review and select all material for archiving. But this is about to change.

A first overview on the ideas pursued in the M-Eco project will be presented at the World Congress on Medical and Health Informatics (MedInfo 2010) in September 2010. The Medical Ecosystem – Personalised Event-based surveillance paper summarizes the main issues relevant to the project. M-Eco will emphasize adaptively and personalised filtering so that relevant signals can be detected for targeting the needs of public health officials who have to syn-thesize facts, assess risks and react to public health threats.

This year, the results of the PHAROS project will be demonstrated. PHAROS is an innovative search platform which allows users exploit the full value of the Web’s increasing share of audiovisual and user-generated content. At CeBIT 2010, L3S will present the newest insights from this area of multimedia information retrieval at the research booth of the state of Lower Saxony.

The L3S team will co-organize a Workshop with the title "Living Web: Making Web Diversity a true asset" at this year’s International Semantic Web Conference in Washington DC., USA. It is the goal of the Workshop to discuss technologies for analysing the diversity in today’s Web content  - rooted in the variety of the content providers and communities contributing to the Web - and of making this diversity more tangible and understandable to the users of the Web.

The Internet is evolving to a Media Web, where both consumption and creation of audio-visual content will continue to rapidly increase and where at the same time, the quality of the content is expected to drastically improve (resolution, frame rate, color depth, stereoscopic information, etc.). Besides these clearly observable trends, we can also expect changes in the way content is published and consumed, as the Future Internet will focus on simplifying the usability, increasing the efficiency, and enhancing the media experience of the users (enhanced mobility, broadband and flexible communication, enhanced interaction, involvement of all senses and emotions, navigation, etc.). Moreover, new content types will appear which together with efficient handling, delivery and protection of the content will be the Future Internet cornerstones. However, all these new characteristics will also create new challenges for the network infrastructure and the services offered.

The three-year project is funded by the European Union through the Seventh Research Framework Programme.

The project kick-off meeting was held in February 2008 in Hannover, Germany.

Dies gilt insbesondere für die Geoinformationswirtschaft und hier besonders für die Bereiche Sicherheit, Katastrophenmanagement und die Prozessierung landesweiter Geobasisdatenbestände. Bestehende Ressourcen müssen regelmäßig einer innovativen Betrachtung unterzogen und um neue Kapazitäten ergänzt werden. Ein wichtiges Ziel ist daher die effektive und effiziente Erschließung existierender Ressourcen und die Optimierung ihrer Auslastung.
