WP Online Experiments

Introduction

The work package “Online Experiments” in PROLEARN[1] will build a knowledge base of online experiments. It will be a catalogue describing online experiments used for educational purposes. Catalogue entries follow the metadata schema defined in the document “Metadata for Online Experiments Specification.doc”.

Specific Online Experiments attributes

Extension of general description

The experiment is documented extensively on the web pages. Documentation comprises the areas:

-         Block diagram and photo of experiment hardware

-         Embedded system TAVA/104 and I/O-Card

-         Galvanometer scanner, laser and photo sensor

-         Experiment environment (tele-presence, programming, communication)

-         Manual control and photo sensor measurements

-         Applet to measure speed (Dynamic Test)

-         Task manager

-         Synchronous shared text editor

-         Desktop sharing with TightVNC

-         Real time operating system JBED

-         Laser graphics library VGLaser

-         Library to access I/O-Card IO-Bib

-         Java development environment JDK

Several tasks have been written for the experiment. In parentheses the average work time (without documentation reading) is given.

  1. Selecting and starting existing Java methods (10 min)
  2. Measuring the speed of the galvanometer scanner (15 min)
  3. Writing a real time program to find the photo sensor (3h)
  4. Writing a program for self-designed animation (2h)
  5. Writing a program for a given simple animation (2h)
  6. Extending the laser graphics library with classes for characters and strings (2h)

The experiment has been used in several classes at the University of Hannover with students from computer science and electrical engineering. Students worked four hours with the experiment in groups of two or three persons with the assistance of  a tutor. They worked on the following tasks:

-         Laboratory for process control, summer term 2003, tasks 1-4. Students could put an emphasis on task 3 or 4.

-         Laboratory to the class “programming in Java”, winter term 2003/2004, tasks 1,2,5 and 6. The last task was optional.

-         Laboratory for process control, summer term 2004, tasks 1-4. The last task was optional.
